This picture totally embodies the American competitive spirit & arrogant nature. But who was really being arrogant this week? The French, favored in the 4x100 freestyle relay, came out and said they were going to "Smash the Americans. That's what we came here to do". It looked like the French were going to pull it off until the American anchor chased down the French world record holder in the final lap to take home the Gold.
I've never screamed at a TV during a swimming match much less jumping up and down! Now, I am sure, in Europe they will be showing these images of the Americans celebrating boisterously and it will be construed as arrogance, but what needs to be included is the context in which the French essentially guaranteed gold. The Chinese have schools where they train Olympic robots from a very young age, the Europeans might have a lot of confidence and passion, but you can not deny that the United States breeds the most competitive athletes in the world.
